One day as a fisherman of salmon
In Simo you can practise versatile fishing of salmon in the northern part of
the Gulf of Bothnia and in the Simojoki river. From the Halttari base salmon has
been fished for centuries. The last catholic archbishop of Sweden-Finland, Olaus
Magnus Gothus, was astonished at the abundance of salmon in The History Of
Northern People; "... Hardly anywhere in Europe fish for salmon is as plentiful
as in the Gulf of Bothnia in the part nearest Lapland." You can participate in
the salmon fishing today together with experienced fishermen. Mauno and Kyösti
Posti, and Timo Matinlassi, who all belong to the last "salmon peasants" have
been able to continue their traditional occupation as fishermen by providing
tourists with a rare opportunity to come along to empty the salmontraps.
